Film sequels are notoriously not as well crafted as their originals. The biggest mistake tends to be that no one wants to stray from a winning formula, so instead of coming up with something fresh, the writer(s) rework the first film. This means that you have little if any character development or you basically have a carbon copy of the first film but set in a new location.
