Films of Note Remaining in 2016

Here we are, already in September, and I can honestly say that 2016 has been a pretty disappointing year in film. Most of the “much anticipated, much hyped” offerings have been boring, Jason Bourne, or just utterly abysmal, Suicide Squad. Of the films I’ve seen this year, my favorite list only includes a few really solid films; most of the ones I’m including I liked for certain characters or situations. (I’m looking at you The Secret...

Kurz’s Tyger’s Hart honors patron

Without patrons, we wouldn’t have Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Sandro Botticelli, Albrecht Durer, or William Shakespeare. The arts need funding, and thankfully, certain individuals have emerged over the centuries who have used their wealth to make sure that theater, painting, literature, and art could thrive. In the Omaha-Council Bluffs area, one of those important patrons was Fred Simon, a fourth-generation family owner of Omaha...

Best of 2015

I’ve put it off long enough. Here we are in January of 2016, the Golden Globes have come and gone, and I haven’t yet posted my “Best of 2015” film list. Somnio

Since Travis Milloy “stumbled into his profession” of screenwriting, he has always “thrown as many balls in the air as he could.” “When I started, I was doing well, but nothing was getting produced, so I decided to just write my own script, and shoot it with my friends,” he said. “I wasn’t trying to appease anyone, and it worked.” The experience taught him that if you “write what you believe in, you can be successful.” “I started...

Scott Kurz and his Lucky Stiff

Even though Scott Kurz made his name on the Omaha stage, his dream has always been to make films, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Since leaving Brigit Saint Brigit in 2012, to pursue a full-time, on-camera acting career, he has been in about 20 commercials, played the lead in the short film, The Fixer; and, most recently, played the character McFarland, in the episode “Just Drive the Truck” on NBC’s Chicago Fire. (He shot in...

Catching up on 2015 films

I don’t know if it was an official New Year’s Resolution or not, but I decided that in 2015, I would make an effort to see more new releases on a more consistent basis. And, thus far, I’ve been doing a pretty good job, keeping up with whatever Hollywood can throw at me. (There have been exceptions, of course.) The only problem with seeing so many films is that I don’t have the time to review them all. That’s why, this week, I’m...
